Troubleshooting Computer/Internet Connection Problems

ALL:

1. Quit and restart the Internet program.
2. Log off and reconnect with Inwave.
3. Shut down computer and turn power off for a few seconds, then restart it.

Windows 95/98/ME:

Close software programs and run scandisk if you start having problems. Run scandisk once a week as a precautionary measure. Choose perform standard test and automatically fix errors options.

Running the disk defragmenter once a month is also recommended.

Macintosh

Rebuild the desktop - hold down the Option and Command (cloverleaf) keys and keep them held down while going up to the special menu and choosing Restart Computer. The computer will shutdown and automatically start loading the extension files again. A window will appear on the screen asking if you are sure you wish to rebuild the desktop. Now you can release the Option and Command keys and click on yes.

E-mail Tips:

Don't try to file attachments that are too large.

Keep your Inbox folder fairly empty - the active mailbox (typically the "In" or "Inbox") folder, takes up RAM when you open the e-mail program.

Sometimes a mail file will get corrupted or have errors. If you keep getting error messages from the operating system when you try to go into or read your e-mail, try making a temporary folder, like "badmail" and moving all the files in your mail folder into the "badmail" folder. Then restart the program you use for e-mail and try using it.

Newsgroup Tips:

When you first start up a newsreader, it will take several minutes to download a file listing all the newsgroups available. As newsgroups are added to news servers periodically, you should tell your news reader to (in Netscape, in the news program, under the Options menu, choose show New Newsgroups).

To locate relevant newsgroups: Go to Yahoo and click on the options link to the right of the search button, http://www.yahoo.com/bin/search/options and switch the dot from Yahoo! to Usenet. Now when you do a search on keyword(s) it will look for them in newsgroups instead of web pages. When it pulls up messages it lists the newsgroups the messages are in.
