Windows 98 Settings
|
Windows 98 requires certain settings in order for your computer to
communicate over the internet.
Have a pen and paper handy and WRITE DOWN the original
settings BEFORE making a change. In case something
doesn't work, you will be able to get back to where you started this
way.
Double-click the My Computer icon on the Desktop, then
double-click Dial Up Networking. Right-click on your Inwave
connection and click Properties. The area code/phone number boxes
will be at the top and there will be a button at the bottom: Configure
and a tab at the top: Server Types.
Click on the Configure button. It will list your modem port,
speaker volume and maximum speed. Go up to the top and click on the Options
tab. At the bottom, put a check in the Display Modem Status box and
click on the OK button at the bottom.
You should be back at the general screen for the Inwave connection.
Click on the Server Types tab. The type of dialup server should
be: PPP, Internet, Windows NT Server, Windows 98. If it isn't, click on
the triangle to the right of the type and scroll down the pop-up list to
get to the correct type.
Under Advanced options, you should just have Enable Software Compression
checked, the other options should not be checked. Under Allowed network
protocols, you just need TCP/IP checked. Click on the TCP/IP settings
button.
The top line: Server Assigned IP Address should be checked, and
the 3rd line: Server Assigned Name Server Address should be
checked.
The bottom two check boxes should have checks In them (Use IP Header
Compression and Use Default Gateway on Remote Network).
Click on OK several times to save your changes and get out of the
dial-up networking.
If your Dial-up Network settings are OK but you still cannot view web
pages or send e-mail, you can try customizing your TCP/IP setting in the
Network icon to see if that helps.
NOTE: The following settings are for stand-alone
computers. Computers which are part of a LAN (local area network) may
require different settings and and additional network components. Check
with your network administrator before making changes. Normally you do NOT
need to change the settings in the Network icon for stand-alone
computers.
Click the Start Button, select Settings, then click Control
Panel. In the Control Panel, double-click the Network icon.
The correct settings in the TCP/IP network component (highlight
it and click on the properties button) are:
