Customer Center - Email Support - How to set up mail filters using Outlook Express's rules

There are two ways to handle spam when using Outlook Express. Have a filter route messages marked as SPAM moved to a different folder where you can check them occasionally before deleting them manually, or have a filter automatically delete the messages from Outlook Express.

To route SPAM: messages to a different folder:

1. Open up Outlook Express, click on the Tools menu, select message rules and click on Mail.screen shot

2. In the 1. Select the Conditions for your rule: section, put a check mark in Where the subject line contains specific words screen shot

3. In the 2. Select the Actions for your rule: section, put a check mark in Move it to the specified folder

4. In the 3. Rule Description section Click on the blue words contains specific words.

5. When the Type Specific Words window opens, type SPAM: in the window and click on the button and then the button. screen shot

6. In the 3. Rule Description section click on the blue word specified.

7. When the Move Folder Selection window appears make sure it has Local Folders selected and click on the button. screen shot

8. On the New Folder window, click in the Folder Name box, type spam and click the button on the New Folder screen and on the Move Folder screen. screen shot

You should now be back at the New Mail screen and in the 3. Rule Description section it should be reading: Where the Subject line contains 'SPAM:'
Move it to the spam folder.
9. Click in the 4. Name of the rule window and type in "move SPAM: to spam folder" and click on the button. screen shot

10. This will take you to the Message Rules screen. Click on the button at the bottom and you are done. screen shot

Messages tagged as SPAM: will go into the SPAM folder, where you can periodically check them to be sure they are junk e-mail, before deleting them.

Alternatively, you can have Outlook Express automatically delete anything marked SPAM: in the subject line. If you choose to do this, you will not have to review and delete the junk mail, however:
Once Outlook Express deletes the message it is irretrievable.

To delete Spam: messages automatically:

1. Open up Outlook Express, click on the Tools menu, select message rules and click on Mail. screen shot

2. In the 1. Select the Conditions for your rule: section, put a check mark in Where the subject line contains specific words screen shot

3. In the 2. Select the Actions for your rule: section, put a check mark in Delete it

4. In the 3. Rule Description section Click on the blue words contains specific words.

5. When the Type Specific Words window opens, type SPAM: in the window and click on the button and then the button. screen shot

6. Click in the 4. Name of the rule window and type in "delete messages with SPAM: in subject" and click on the button. screen shot

7. This will take you to the Message Rules screen. Click on the button at the bottom and you are done. screen shot

Now all messages tagged SPAM: by our mail server filters will be automatically deleted by Outlook Express.
