Customer Center - Email Support - Blocking Unwanted Emails

Below are descriptions of where to find the filter settings in some of the more popular e-mail programs.

Netscape Communicator - in the Mail program, under the Edit menu, choose Mail Filters. Click on the New button. You can set up a filter by content in the Sender, To, Date, Body, Subject, and other fields of an e-mail message. You can set it for things a field should or shouldn't have. You can set the message to be moved to a particular folder or to be deleted. You name each filter, and can give it a description. You can also turn the filter on or off, so if you need to get something the filter usually blocks, you can switch it off, rather than having to delete the filter and then re configure it from scratch again.

Eudora Light E-mail - under the Tools menu, choose Filters. You can filter both incoming and outgoing messages, by the To, From, Subject, Carbon Copy, Reply To fields in the message header, and whether they do or do not contain a string (for example, you can set it to dump junk messages that don't have your specific e-mail address in the To field). You set the filter to perform an action, such as transfer to the Trash folder.

Microsoft Internet Mail and News - under the Mail menu, choose Inbox Assistant. Click on Add button and you can set up a message to be moved to a specific folder (including the Deleted Items folder) when a message arrives with a specific string in the To, Carbon Copy, From, or Subject fields.

Microsoft Outlook Express (ver. 4.72) - the Inbox Assistant is located under the Tools Menu in Outlook Express.

Microsoft Outlook Express (ver. 5.00.2314.1300) now they call it the Message Rules, but it is still located under the Tools Menu.

Microsoft Outlook 98 (ver 8.5) - You use the Rules Wizard under the Tools Menu. This is worded somewhat differently than Microsoft's other e-mail programs. You have to create a new rule, enter the address(es) it applies to under the contact list, and select the action for the rule to perform.

Another trick frequently used by people when posting in the Newsgroups is changing the e-mail and reply-to addresses in their e-mail programs, and then create a signature file (a text file that gets pasted to the bottom of each e-mail message you send out) telling people how to modify their e-mail address to make it work correctly.

For example, I could switch my e-mail address in my settings from support@inwave.com to supportxyz@inwave.com. Then I write a signature text file that says: "To reply to me, remove the xyz from my e-mail address". When professional e-mail spammers use their special programs which read the News Groups for e-mail addresses, the programs will dutifully grab "supportxyz@inwave.com" and send their junk messages to it. When Inwave's mail machine gets a message addressed to supportxyz@inwave.com, it will reject it as there is no "supportxyz" at Inwave to deliver it to. When a live human being reads my post in the News Group, they will see they have to change the address in order to send a reply to me. Of course, spammers can manually read messages and key in your address correctly to their junk messages, but that takes a lot of labor so they usually can't afford to do it.
